How does Tempranillo develop over time?
A serious tempranillo, when we get it 'right' produces spectacular results: rich, earthy, complex, a wine of interest and so easy to drink. It may be our climate or the limestone red soil where we grow it. Temp's spicy, fleshy opulence and lower acidity balance its characteristic late-palate tannins, but also ensure that it gathers complexity after some time in bottle. ~ Winemaker : Peter Leske
The Spaniards like to age their ‘serious’ Tempranillos in both barrel and bottle for extended periods (resulting in Riserva and Gran Riserva wines), and when they get it ‘right’ the results are spectacular: rich, earthy, complex, leathery, chewy wines of interest and length. But often ‘mature’.
Our Black Hinge Tempranillo, when we make it, echoes some of that approach, but with much less of a delay before we offer it to you. It may be our climate or the clones we use… but while we seek ageworthiness in these wines, if we waited the 3-5 years that Spanish wine law dictates, all freshness would be gone. There is some earthy richness, as well as the distinctive gritty tannins that remind us of good, high-cocoa dark chocolate. Medium weight; a faint hint of oak; interest and intrigue are paramount…
